Gen Z raises mental health awareness through the project “Den tram nghe cham”

5 FPT University students launch the project “Den Tram Nghe Cham” to help young people listen, share, and connect with themselves and others amid the pressures of academics, life, and social media.

Promoting accurate understanding of “mental health” among students

The project was implemented from January to April 2025 by a group of Multimedia Communication students from FPT University, including Huynh Thi Hong Minh (K16), Pham Minh Hoang Phu (K16), Phan Minh Khang Anh (K17), Nguyen Thi Minh Anh (K17), and Pham Thi Bao Tran (K17). These young individuals share concerns about the mental health situation within the student community, especially among Gen Z — a generation growing up with social media and facing pressure from invisible societal norms.

In response, the team decided to turn it into their graduation thesis campaign, with the goal of creating a truly safe space for students. “We understand that self-comparison, academic pressure, and societal expectations cause many young people to experience psychological stress without truly knowing how to identify or care for their mental well-being. That’s why this project aims to help students better understand mental health, feel more open when discussing it, and gain diverse perspectives on self-care and connection with others,” a group representative shared.

The project also aims to clarify that the terms “mental health” or “emotional well-being” are not just about temporary feelings, but about maintaining balance and the ability to adapt to life’s pressures. Using these terms helps students grasp their true meaning and motivates them to take care of their mental well-being just as they would their physical health.

Experiencing each station and listening to expert advice

In the student workshop, the team designed the program as an experiential journey consisting of multiple stations using gamification, making mental health topics more accessible and engaging.

At “Tram Hieu” (Understand Station), participants explore mental health concepts through flipboards and test their knowledge with small challenges. “Tram Noi” (Speak Station) offers a safe space to share and listen to one another. “Tram Lam” (Do Station) encourages self-expression and emotional release through creative activities. Lastly, “Tram Ky Niem” (Memory Station) helps preserve meaningful moments and connect each participant’s journey.
These four interactive stations not only raise awareness but also create opportunities for students to genuinely “touch” their own emotions in the most natural way.

Alongside this, the project also featured a talk show, giving students the opportunity to listen to valuable insights from MSc. Dr. Tran Thien Thang and Dr. Nguyen Minh Thuy Chau (First-level Specialist in Psychiatry). The two mental health experts discussed key topics such as the definition of mental health, the differences between psychological issues and mental disorders, factors affecting mental well-being, and how to recognize and address negative impacts effectively. Thanks to their relatable and accessible way of presenting information, the speakers made it easier for students to understand important aspects of mental health.

Notably, the Q&A session between students and experts highlighted strong interest in topics like depression, FOMO (fear of missing out), and ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). These are common issues faced by today’s youth, making the talk show not only academically informative but also practically meaningful for the student audience.

“One young participant shared that they often wear many ‘masks,’ changing themselves to fit in with different groups. Over time, they forgot who they truly were and didn’t know how to break free from that cycle. This story reflects the challenges many young people face in the search for personal identity and the difficulty of confronting complex emotions. That’s exactly why ‘Den Tram Nghe Cham’ was created — a place where people can take off their masks, listen to themselves, and rediscover genuine connection,” the project representative explained.

With continuous effort, “Den Tram Nghe Cham” has become a meaningful stop where young people can learn to tune in to their emotions, find a balance between their inner world and external demands, and learn to care for and appreciate themselves amidst the pressures of modern life.
