FPT Multimedia Communication Students Explore the Role of a Director of Photography

This morning, June 3, students majoring in Multimedia Communication at FPT University Ho Chi Minh Campus had the opportunity to engage with renowned speakers in the field of cinematography.

The Filmtalk event, titled “The DOP Profession: From Assistant to Head of Department,” is part of the Film Elemento series, designed to provide students with practical knowledge from the real-life experiences and professional insights of seasoned experts. This prepares them well for their group projects in video production courses.

The guest speaker for the event was Hoang Trung Nam, a Director of Photography (DOP). Hoang Trung Nam, a graduate in Communication from South Korea, has a burning passion for visual storytelling and cinema. He has spent nearly a decade honing his craft in storytelling through the camera. Hoang Trung Nam is not only a talented DOP but also an outstanding Cinematographer and Camera Operator. His deep understanding and flexibility in each role have enabled him to create visually stunning, sophisticated, and emotionally rich films.

Camera Operator Tran Doan Nam is a highly skilled and promising Camera Operator and Steadicam Operator. With his adept skills and creativity, he consistently delivers beautiful, smooth, and refined footage. His contributions have enhanced the quality of many notable film projects. Some of his standout works include “My Mr. Wife” (Camera Operator), “Season for Love Songs” (Camera Operator), “Nha Ba Nu” (Steadicam Operator), and “Saigon Souls” (Short Film—Steadicam Operator).

At the event, students were able to hear real-life stories from the guests, which fostered and inspired their passion for creative arts as they pursued multimedia communication.

D.O.P stands for Director of Photography, also known as a cinematographer. They direct the filming to create the highest-quality footage, ensuring both artistic and technical excellence. With the development of the film production industry, the role of the Director of Photography has become increasingly important. A D.O.P is essential in a film production project: they are responsible for the quality of the shots, create impressive scenes that spark the audience’s imagination, and contribute to the overall success of the film.
