No longer thinking that philosophy is a scary subject because passing the exam or not is determined by…God, the creative way of organizing lessons with Philosophy Talk of FPT University has helped students get closer to Philosophy.
At the 3rd seminar with the theme “Movies” last week, students of FPT University, Ho Chi Minh City, met and interacted with Mr. Nguyen Viet Anh – Philosopher Consultant and Head of the Coi Viet Library. Many lessons and practical skills to apply Philosophy in the business field have been thoroughly shared by Mr. Viet Anh. In addition, participants also explored philosophy in the field of cinema through two films, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “Forrest Gump.” Through the cinema, young people have a more multidimensional view of philosophy and understand more about ancient philosophical thoughts, from which they can choose their own thinking methods.
Ms. Kieu Thi Thu Chung, a lecturer at FPT University HCMC and one of the first founders of the Philosophy Talk, said: “Philosophy Talk is a series of activities for students to identify that philosophy is not something sublime but lies in daily lives. Gradually, students will see the beauty and value of this subject but not “popularize” Philosophy.
Many philosophical topics and concepts seem unprofitable and “hard to swallow,” but through a new approach and interesting discussion at Philosophy Talk, they become “softened,” more attractive, and easier to remember. For example, coming to the Seminar “I – Conflict,” the students will discuss the topic “Cinema – Conflict,” but more specifically, the contradictions about the love of young people exploited through cinematic looks, which are full of romance but very realistic. Or, come to the webinar “Negative of negation,” students will learn about these “strange but familiar” rules through many small topics; each topic is clarified with real characters and stories.
Up to now, Philosophy Talk has been successfully organized by FPT University students through 7 consecutive seasons, each season lasts for 1 week with various philosophical topics. One of the factors that make Philosophy Week new, interesting, and easy to swallow is the application of constructivist teaching and learning methods. New, interesting, intellectual, and interactive, Philosophy Talk has become an attractive “spiritual food” that provides philosophical knowledge in an easily accessible and memorable way. Not having to sigh and yawn at these interesting and creative textbooks, teaching and learning methods have brought FPT University students fun and rich experiences in philosophy lessons.
The social construction method has been implemented by FPT University since mid-2021. In these classes, students do not sit still, silently read the textbook or listen attentively to the lecture, instead focusing on interaction. In every class, students can freely present their views, present in front of teachers and friends, and have group meetings to discuss problems.
