The scientific research conducted by students Nguyen Thanh Dat and Ngo Dinh An (specializing in Artificial Intelligence at FPT University Quy Nhon Campus), under the guidance of lecturer Dr. Phan Thi Le Thuyen, was recently published in the IEEE journal – a Q1 journal listed in the ISI/Scopus database. This marks the first time that students from FPT University Quy Nhon Campus have had their research published in an international scientific journal.
The study, titled “Research on Predicting Abnormal Student Behavior in A Learning Environment with Poor Data,” was developed by students Thanh Dat and Dinh An based on the practical demands of online semesters during the COVID-19 period. The team devised a method to detect abnormal student behaviors in an online learning environment with an accuracy rate of up to 98%, despite limited data availability.
The project creatively applies Contrastive Learning and Face-Dictionary methods to a computer vision problem. A notable aspect of this research is its effectiveness with limited data, making it a cost-effective solution while maintaining high performance. This opens up a new direction for ensuring the quality of online learning and examinations. It also contributes to supporting and enhancing fairness and quality in remote assessment, especially in online exams.
Reflecting on the research journey, which spanned over a year with several months awaiting publication results, the two students shared that despite numerous challenges, they and their advisor, Dr. Phan Thi Le Thuyen, always encouraged one another to persevere. They expressed, “With the guidance, support, and companionship of Dr. Phan Thi Le Thuyen, we overcame each challenge to complete this research. Ultimately, we achieved our greatest goal of having our work published in a global Q1 journal.”
Throughout the research project, Dr. Phan Thi Le Thuyen shared her sentiments: “Supporting students from the early days to the final rewarding outcome is a joy for any teacher, especially when that achievement is recognized by esteemed industry experts. This is just the beginning, but I truly appreciate the hard work and dedication of these two young students. I hope Dat and An’s determination and resilience will inspire many other students at the university in their scientific research journey.”
Nguyen Thanh Dat and Ngo Dinh An are high-achieving students with numerous accomplishments. Both were awarded the Golden Frog title for the Summer and Fall 2023 semesters at FPT University Quy Nhon Campus and won first prize in the AI for Life 2023 competition. Additionally, Dat and An are among the first distinguished students from FPT University Quy Nhon Campus to be officially offered employment contracts at FPT Software after completing their corporate internships.
