NVIDIA and FPT Corporation invest $200 million in AI factory

Nvidia and FPT are set to invest $200 million to establish an AI Factory with a supercomputer system using the H100 GPU for research and development.

At the signing ceremony on April 23 in Hanoi, the FPT representative stated that they would invest $200 million with the aim of expanding Vietnam’s sovereign cloud computing ecosystem. The AI Factory will not manufacture hardware but will operate on Nvidia’s latest technology platform, including AI Enterprise development applications and the GPU H100 Tensor Core graphics chip.

According to a representative from the Vietnamese technology conglomerate, the mission of the factory is to enhance AI research and development capabilities, thereby building advanced applications and solutions focusing on GenAI, autonomous vehicles, and green transformation.

The factory is expected to contribute to enhancing Vietnam’s capabilities in providing high-tech AI and cloud solutions globally while also upgrading the country’s technology workforce.

“We are committed to making Vietnam a global AI development center,” said Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of FPT.

Meanwhile, Keith Strier, Nvidia’s Vice President, stated, “AI has immense potential to improve quality of life and strengthen the economy for all nations through fostering innovative breakthroughs in various fields such as healthcare, agriculture, meteorology, and manufacturing. We will partner with businesses to accelerate digital transformation, making Vietnam an AI powerhouse.”

FPT plans to incorporate Nvidia’s training content into university and high school curricula to develop high-tech human resources. The conglomerate aims to have at least 30,000 students access the program within five years.

At the event, Nvidia announced FPT as a Service Delivery Partner in its network, specializing in providing software, hardware, cloud computing services, and integrated AI solutions using Nvidia technology. FPT will focus on automotive technology, manufacturing, finance, banking, and insurance.

Both parties will also collaborate on developing cloud gaming services in Vietnam through infrastructure and deploying GeForce Now services.

Earlier, on April 22, Keith Strier met with Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung to strengthen semiconductor and AI development in Vietnam. A source revealed Nvidia’s intention to establish a research, development, and training center for AI, install supercomputers, and potentially transfer some GPU production to Vietnam.

In December 2023, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang visited Asia, including Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam, to seek potential partners. Throughout the meetings, he emphasized Asia’s status as a global technology hub and expressed the corporation’s desire to expand its operations in the region.

In early April, Budi Arie Setiadi, Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Information, disclosed Nvidia’s plan to establish a $200 million AI center in collaboration with telecommunications company Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison. The new facility in Surakarta aims to reinforce local telecommunications infrastructure, digital human resources, and talent. Nvidia declined to comment on the information.

Founded in 1993, Nvidia has been a semiconductor industry leader, with its AI chips in high demand. In early 2022, the company announced the H100, the world’s most powerful GPU at the time, though analysts criticized its timing due to cost-cutting measures in various sectors. However, by the end of the year, global demand for Nvidia’s AI chips surged, leading to a significant increase in the company’s market capitalization from $400 billion in January 2023 to $2 trillion at the beginning of this year.
