Sustainability across the curriculum: dedicated and SDG-integrated courses at FPT University

At FPT University, sustainability is not somewhere far away — it is right inside the specific courses students take every day. There are compulsory courses the whole university takes, electives for students to go deeper by interest and career path, and research projects carried out by students themselves. Together they bring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) naturally into the curriculum, tied to each student’s own field.

About a quarter of compulsory courses link to the SDGs

Within FPT University’s compulsory courses, about 25% are designed to integrate content from the Sustainable Development Goals. In other words, not just a few isolated courses but MANY compulsory ones — courses students must take — carry sustainability value, spanning many fields and many different SDGs. The university’s statistics show these courses range from technology (Machine Learning, Computer Vision, IoT – SDG 9), business and supply chain (SDG 8, SDG 12), law and the environment (Land, Natural Resources and Environmental Law – SDG 15; Labour Law – SDG 8), to courses distinctive to FPTU. Flagship examples: traditional music on national instruments and Vovinam martial arts — both linked to SDG 11 (sustainable communities, preserving Vietnam’s heritage and traditional martial arts); Vovinam also builds students’ physical health. The On-The-Job-Training course, in turn, connects to several goals at once — SDG 1, 4, 8 and 9.

Electives subject: the Language–Pedagogy combo and the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction (IBSTPI) certificate.

Among electives, students can take additional languages such as English, Japanese, Korean and Chinese to widen opportunities for cooperation and intercultural understanding. Notably, for every language programme the curriculum ALWAYS includes a “language – pedagogy” combo for students to choose: alongside mastering a language, students gain teaching and training skills — linked directly to SDG 4 (quality education). In this way, today’s language learners can become tomorrow’s skilled teachers and trainers — multiplying quality education across the community.

The program also includes a teaching component aligned with international IBSTPI standards, offering students from all majors an additional option to develop their pedagogical skills.

Student SDG research projects

Beyond the classroom, many FPTU students choose research topics and capstones linked directly to the SDGs — from education technology and the environment to solutions for vulnerable groups. That is where disciplinary knowledge meets society’s big questions.

One of the notable research projects:” Detecting security vulnerabilities in blockchain-based smart contracts by integrating static analysis, large language models (LLMs)”

This project was conducted by a student team comprising Nguyen Hong Son, Tran Quang Quan, Vu Quang Huy, and Nguyen Thanh Danh, under the guidance of Mr. Tran Van Ninh (MSc) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Ngoc Minh Duc. The team focused on detecting security vulnerabilities in blockchain-based smart contracts by integrating static analysis, large language models (LLMs), and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques. A key highlight of the research is the “Corrective RAG” mechanism, which filters data quality before processing by the model.

With approximately one-quarter of its courses, 107 subjects totaling nearly 400 credits, integrating the SDGs, FPT University demonstrates that sustainable development is not merely peripheral to the curriculum; rather, it is taught, studied, and put into practice within each specific discipline. This includes a range of compulsory courses, electives on pedagogical skills, and student research projects.
