Spreading education for the Sustainable Development Goals to the community: FPT University brings SDG knowledge to students, residents, alumni and disadvantaged areas

Education at FPT University does not stop at the lecture hall. From school students across the country, ward and commune officials and alumni to ethnic-minority communities in remote mountains, our university proactively brings knowledge, technology and people to the community, to spread understanding of and action for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each activity below is more than a class: it brings the SDGs, quality education (SDG 4), reduced inequalities (SDG 10), innovation and digital infrastructure (SDG 9), effective institutions (SDG 16), closer to the community.

1. Alumni and the community: free courses on technology for sustainable development

FPT University’s Ho Chi Minh City campus runs many free training courses for the community, especially teachers, school students, school managers and alumni, around STEM, artificial intelligence and applying technology for the Sustainable Development Goals; the university’s other campuses run similar activities at a scale suited to their locality. These programmes ran continuously from 2025 into early 2026, with many courses opening monthly, especially online courses that stay permanently open. Depending on the programme, reach ranges from a few localities to nationwide, helping build the capacity of teachers, the foundation of quality education. For alumni, this is also how the university stays alongside them after graduation- lifelong learning as an open door rather than a slogan.

2. Local community: students spreading digital skills for effective governance and an inclusive society

From Quang Ninh, Da Nang and Gia Lai to Ho Chi Minh City, groups of FPTU students regularly go to localities to support two-tier local governments in digital transformation: guiding officials and residents to use online public services, apply AI at work and get familiar with digital platforms. Students bring knowledge to the community while learning valuable real-world lessons from residents themselves.

3. Digital learning resources for students in remote mountainous areas of Dien Bien: equitable education, leaving no one behind

In remote mountain areas, the digital divide is still wide. FPT University brought and donated digital learning materials and platforms to Dien Bien province, home to many ethnic-minority communities. The gift gives highland teachers and students more tools to teach and learn, a small step towards narrowing the educational gap between regions.

4. AI Young Guru: responsible-AI education for school students

AI Young Guru is a nationwide artificial-intelligence competition for secondary-school students, led by FPT University in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention. What makes it special: before competing, every registered student gets free access to four AI lessons on Coursera, written by FPT University lecturers, to build a solid foundation. Students then form teams and compete through several rounds, with finalists winning valuable prizes. The results are impressive: 15,397 registrations and 8,004 students completing the Coursera lessons, from 1,687 schools across 34 provinces and cities. More than a contest, AI Young Guru is an educational programme: it helps students across the country understand what AI is, use it safely and responsibly, and put technology to work for learning, innovation and sustainable development.

5. Vulnerable groups, specifically orphans who have relocated to Da Nang from other localities and are now attending Hope School, are provided with free English classes

One of FPT University’s clearest educational activities for a vulnerable group is the “Hand in Hand to Go Global” project – free English teaching for students at Hope School in Da Nang. Hope School is a shared home for 110 orphaned children from across the country who come to live and study there – children who have lost loved ones and been taken far from their home towns and families. The project gives them free English tutoring, taught directly by the specialised English department together with the university’s student volunteers. Its overarching aim is to equip these orphaned children with the best possible foundation in English – a stepping stone to confidently open up more opportunities for learning and for their future.

This is not a one-off. The project runs WEEKLY, beginning in May 2023 and continuing through MULTIPLE PHASES across three consecutive years (the university published its phase-4 review on 16 January 2025). Each lesson plan is tailored so primary and secondary pupils can follow easily, while FPTU students also grow, honing their teaching skills and spreading a spirit of sharing. By persistently bringing knowledge to the most disadvantaged children, the project embodies the “leave no one behind” spirit of SDG 4 (quality education) and SDG 10 (reduced inequalities).

Beyond English, FPT University also supports Hope School with technology resources, lecturers and students in AI, helping the children access new technology.

Conclusion: FPT University, spreading education for the SDGs beyond the campus gate.

School students, local officials and residents, alumni, highland communities and children in need of support – FPT University reaches out to each group with suitable educational activities. In this way, the Sustainable Development Goals are not only taught on campus but spread as understanding and action across the community- so that no one is left behind.
