Đang Viet Thanh, a student of K16 at FPT University Can Tho campus, experienced both Asian and European cultures through an exchange program. In September 2023, during his first visit to France, he was quite overwhelmed as he couldn’t control living expenses. Despite spending over 2000 euros, Thành still couldn’t find suitable accommodation, and relying on Uber instead of public transportation only added to his expenses. This experience taught Thành for the first time how to enhance his life skills in a foreign land. By the second month, Thành received support from the Vietnamese student community abroad and gradually learned to adapt to international living. He began to study and experience with peace of mind

Fascinated by long-distance travels, the FPT University student continues to select China as a destination this year. “China has everything that France has but much more enjoyable. The time here not only expands my horizons but also brings diverse and rich cultural experiences, as well as making the right decision for choosing a place to study and work in the future,” Thành shared.
The most valuable experience Thành has discovered during his time abroad is actively learning the language of the place he lives. Despite being fluent in English, Thành realized it wasn’t enough to deeply understand the cultural essence of each country. This prompted Thành to learn more languages to better communicate with international friends.
In his first semester participating in an exchange program at Beijing Foreign Studies University, Nguyen Hai Dang, a student from FPT University Hanoi branch, successfully achieved her goal of using English exclusively and broadening her understanding of cultural diversity worldwide. However, there were moments when Dang found herself in ironic situations, as locals primarily communicated in Chinese and were reluctant to assist when she spoke in English. Fortunately, at FPT University, students have the option to choose a second foreign language, such as Chinese or Japanese. Despite initially limited proficiency, Dang’s boldness enabled him to quickly integrate into the rhythm of the populous country.
“For me, teamwork has been a precious opportunity to work in a multicultural environment. Throughout our collaboration, I have observed each member’s distinct personalities and exceptional skills. For instance, a Korean team member excelled in research, while friends from Malaysia and Cambodia were innovative with new ideas. This experience has made me more open-minded and courageous in expressing my own viewpoints, ready to embrace diverse opinions without fear of ridicule or embarrassment,” Dang explained.
Meanwhile, participating in the student exchange at SIAS International University, Cao Thi Phuong Thao, a female student specializing in International Business at FPT University, felt fortunate to gain deeper insights into the etiquette of business dinners among entrepreneurs there. This included demonstrating utmost hospitality towards partners, warmly welcoming guests before discussing business matters, only picking up chopsticks after all have been served with five dishes, and ensuring the eldest member at the table is the first to be served drinks by each member present.
Thao shared, ‘The journey helped me understand why China has developed so much, motivating me to delve deeper into its culture and people. After 4 months in Hà Nam, the cradle of Chinese culture, I’ve realized the need to enhance my knowledge and skills further to have opportunities to explore more beneficial things, especially as I aim to work in international business.’
