FPT Education pioneers in applying Constructivism theory to teaching

From this Summer 2021 semester, the Constructivism theory will be piloted and deployed for a number of subjects at FPT University.

Chairman Truong Gia Binh once affirmed that Constructivism is “the strength that makes me and FPT today”. The head of FPT also taught math classes by himself using the Constructivism method for F students. With the philosophy of education and training that is the process of organizing and managing learners’ self-study”, FPT Education has methodically researched and officially put this method into application in the Summer semester this year with some subjects.

Constructivism is an important learning theory that educators use to help their students learn. Constructivism is based on the idea that people actively construct or make their own knowledge, and that reality is determined by their experiences as learners. Basically, learners use their previous knowledge as a foundation and build on it with new things that they learn. So everyone’s individual experiences make their learning unique to them.

“This teaching method will bring outstanding results when applying information technology. Currently, FPT University is applying the EduNext platform to the teaching process to maximize support for this method,” analyzed Mr. Huynh Van Bay – Head of the Training Department at FPT Can Tho University.

Mr. Bay also emphasized that Constructivism has 2 characteristics, which are different from the traditional teaching method. The first one is that the lecturer will limit the traditional lecture-style in class. They will prepare documents and guide students on how to study the lesson before coming to class. When going to class, the teacher uses the prepared set of constructive questions to ask questions for learners to answer in turn.

Secondly, with this method, students always have to study the material before coming to class. When coming to class, students actively answer questions, listen to or critique other students’ answers to draw knowledge for themselves.

Applying Constructivism to the teaching process, educators have generalized into 4 steps of Constructivism including mobilizing experience, connecting knowledge, scientific debating and applying knowledge. As soon as it was implemented in the Summer term, the teaching work at FPT University Can Tho has shown remarkable advantages. The EduNext system supports classroom teachers in organizing students to submit answers, comments and votes. Students also enthusiastically responded, studied the lesson before coming to class, in class, focused on sending answers, comments, votes, etc. and reducing distraction.

FPT University was established with the mission to develop a ‘new generation university’ with a modern educational philosophy that combines training activities with the actual need for skills in the country, leveraging Vietnam to a level at which it can compete with developed countries in the world.

FPT University trains industrial engineers, and this requires a close association with IT firms, combining training with reality to be able to implement the most advanced technologies.

Notably, 98% of FPT University graduates get a job within 12 months of graduation with an average salary of 8.3 million; 15% of graduates work for foreign countries and more than 30% work for FPT after graduation.
