Review from A to Z about the OJT: “Study, work, play, and take the exam – Unforgettable memories”

The new Spring 2023 semester is coming, so it’s time for FPT University students to be ready for the internship. Surely, the students are having a lot of worries as well as questions about the journey of several months in the actual working environment, right!

Fortunately, all questions such as “I don’t know what I like, I’m not confident in my CV, Is it alright to choose a career that is completely unrelated to what I studied in college , I don’t know if the internship period is as expected?…” will be addressed by a review of Dieu Vi’s ideal internship from A to Z!

This post will be divided into four sections, which are STUDYING, WORKING, PLAYING, and TAKING THE EXAMS, respectively. I will then summarize for you a few straightforward but helpful suggestions. It will undoubtedly help you feel less stressed and more confident about yourself.

First, my name is Dieu Vi – a student of FPTU, majoring in International Business with a logistic emphasis, but my internship position is Internal Communications. I work in the industry that be completely unrelated to what I studied in college. I work as an intern in FPT Healthcare Solution (FHS) with a salary of 3xx,000,000 VND/day. These are just few facts about myself. It’s time to start my journey.

LEARN – I LEARN WHAT I LIKE

I worried about working in an industry that was totally unrelated to what I studied in college before the internship time, just as you did. I confided in Ms. Ngoc, who advised me not to be overly stressed out, saying that these four months of an internship should be considered as getting actual working experience in the office and that no matter what you do, you will always learn something new. She gave me some advice, and I tried to learn new things that weren’t related to my major to see what I could do for enjoyment. After finishing the course to become a Tester, I want to enroll in another Business Analyst course. I applied for Internal Communications instead of going to work as a tester after graduating from college. I’ve tried learning new things to see which ones are best for me; otherwise, how would I know if it’s not? Don’t worry, just learn and do what you don’t know; who knows, I might learn something that goes beyond my own capabilities.

WORKING – I CHOOSE A JOB THAT I FEEL HAPPY

I worked as Internal Communications at FHS, which I could talk face-to-face and meet a lot of people. At that position, I was able to make the most of my own abilities as well as the skills that I had accumulated before. I organize weekly and monthly events, lead tours for Fsoft customers, support new employees onboard and also make monthly newsletters for projects,…

Some typical events that I and Team YU have organized such as Vitamin’s Day, Employee of the Month, FHS Bowling Tournament, FHS’s Got Talent, Semi Sumup,… It is useful to get to know the senior brothers and sisters. Thank you very much.

PLAY – WORK HARD AND PLAY HARD

I have to admit, during my internship, I traveled a lot. I didn’t know I traveled so much until a few friends texted me and asked me: “Vi, is Vi not be on the job training this time?”. I laughed when I received that question, then said that I was on vacation but I was working. Thanks to this position, I have the opportunity to be a tour guide for foreign customers, organize Team Building for the project at the unit.

I remember the memory of going to Da Nang, missed booking tickets months before. However, the trip coincided with the preparation time of the SEMI SUMUP event. I take my laptop to run. Wake up in the morning at 8am, sit at work until 11am and wait for Dung and Thuy to wake up. Finished up the toys to the wharf until 3 am the next morning to come home. Happy. Traveled for almost a week, but still lightheaded. I’m so crazy after Covid.

I still have the memories of going to Da Nang. However, the trip coincided with the preparation time of the SEMI SUMUP event. I bring my laptop when travelling. Get up at eight in the morning, go to work until eleven, and then wait for Dung and Thuy to get up. We start to dress up and go out until the following morning. We are so happy. After over a week of travel, I was still dizzy.

TAKING THE EXAMS – READY TO CHALLENGE

I was invited to take part in the Healthcare Hackathon 2022 by Hien, a lovely and kind student, during my internship. I also questioned my qualifications and fretted about them. If you don’t try, how will you know? So I agree.

The incredibly skilled members of Team Big Hero 6 allowed me to make more new pals. I completely admire how you guys were able to code nonstop for 24 hours. I sincerely appreciate your assistance in giving me such a special experience.

TIP – If you are feeling uncertain about your choice

As I mentioned above, I am happy with and proud of my internship. When the internship is over, I want you to have the same impression. Here are a few tips that I would like to give you:

1. ANY CHOICE IS AWESOME

The internship time is neither long nor short. Work on whatever you want even if it is unrelated to your major because it only lasts for four months until we return to school. Because no matter what you are working on, you will develop or hone a talent that will benefit you.

Try connecting the dots (the ability to connect lessons from the past to solve problems in the present and in the future), for example, if your long-term goal is to become a Project Manager, then this position will definitely need the following skills such as: Communication, Leadership, Conflict Resolution,…However, since you are currently in a tester position, it is invisible to you that you need to improve your communication skills (exchange with team members and customers). Sometimes arguing with Dev, he uses the ability to resolve conflicts. Let’s enjoy it!

2. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CONFIDENTIAL ABOUT YOUR CV

Remember the “Connecting the dots” method that I mentioned in the above advice. Looking back at the past, I believe that the activities that you have participated in in the club and in class will help you match the position you want to apply for. Next, you will receive a higher salary if you communicate in English. Enhance your LinkedIn profile to increase your score.

3. EXPANDING NETWORKING

When we are going to work, we neet to actively talk and build relationships with colleagues. Don’t be shy if you don’t know. Try actively texting or meeting them for a coffee to show your admiration and ask the questions you are wondering (remember to do your research first; don’t ask things that a google search will answer). I’m sure they’ll be impressed with you. Later, if there is a good project, the colleagues will invite you to work with them.

Finally, I wish you all a happy and useful internship.”

Thank you for sharing, Dieu Vi. I wish you a new semester full of luck and good results!
